Reviewed by the National Genealogical Society Quarterly; at the recommendation of Mr. Chris Nordmann and Elizabeth Shown Mills, we submitted our recently published three-volume study, James Lea, James Lea, James Lea of Caswell County, North Carolina (1790), which presents a documentary resolution of this identity problem consistent with the Genealogical Proof Standard.
The persistent conflation of men of identical name in the same locality remains one of the most challenging problems in genealogical research. In late eighteenth-century Caswell County, North Carolina, three contemporaneous men named James Lea have long been treated as one—resulting in compounded errors across multiple published accounts.
Through exhaustive research and careful correlation of land, tax, court, and probate records, Volume One distinguishes the three men and reconstructs their respective family groups across three generations. The work resolves prior conflations by applying layered analysis, negative evidence, and contextual reconstruction, and it offers a replicable methodology for addressing comparable same-name problems in Southern research.
Given the Quarterly’s emphasis on analytical rigor, sound documentation, and methodological contribution, I believe the findings lend themselves to a condensed article demonstrating both the evidentiary process and its broader applicability. Volume II contains appendices of the sources.
Volume III in color improves the Big-Y study of the Lea families from Caswell and Person Counties, orth Carolina. This is the most comprehensive Y-DNA study done to date, analyzed by the renowned genetic genealogist, Dr. Maurice Gleeson.
Volume IV contains map plats, grants, and deeds of early Lea families in Caswell and Person Counties, North Carolina.
